ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons'
football team dropped its fourth straight game with a 23-7 loss to
No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action at
Shelton Field on Saturday afternoon.
Mary Hardin-Baylor took the opening kickoff and went 64 yards in
15 plays, but had to settle for a 23-yard field goal from Alan
Munoz to take a 3-0 with 7:38 to play in the first half. The
Cowboys were forced to punt on their only possession of the first
quarter.
UMHB then went 84 yards in 12 plays and Kyle Noack hit
Pi'Dadro Davis on a 10-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive
and make it 10-0 with 11:43 to play in the half.
The Cowboys then drove the ball down the field but turned the ball
over on downs at the UMHB 15. On the very next play, HSU's
L.C. Cisneroz intercepted LiDarral Bailey but again the Cowboys had
to punt.
UMHB then took the ball 43 yards in seven plays and Munoz hit a
51-yard field goal to make it 13-0 with one second to play in the
half.
Quincy Daniels scampered 39 yards for a touchdown on UMHB's
first possession of the second half to make it 20-0. After HSU was
forced to punt again, Brett Parker fumbled the punt and the Cowboys
recovered at the UMHB 42.
HSU then went 42 yards in five plays and Taylor Byrd found Justice
Baker on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Munoz hit another 22-yard field
goal for UMHB to make it 23-7 early in the fourth quarter to round
out the scoring.
UMHB rolled up 452 yards of offense, including 327 yards on the
ground, but turned the ball over three times. HSU managed just 235
yards of offense. Byrd finished the day 7-for-20 for 130 yards and
a touchdown. He was harassed by the UMHB defensive line as he was
sacked three times and forced to scramble several other times.
Bailey had 151 yards rushing for UMHB and Daniels added 145.
Shelton Rainey had 11 tackles and Roy Gamboa added 10 for the
Cowboys. Javicz Jones had 13 tackles for UMHB.
The Cowboys are now 1-4 on the year and 0-3 in ASC play. UMHB
improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in ASC action. HSU will play at
East Texas Baptist next week.
