Boxscore

ABILENE, Texas — Freshman Taylor Thigpen scored her first career goal in the 87th minute to propel the Hardin-Simmons women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over ex-ASC rival Austin College Friday morning in the first game of American Southwest Conference- Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Soccer Challenege at the HSU Soccer Complex.

The Cowgirls had taken the lead in the final minute of the first half when Sarah Stansell headed in a corner kick from Jordan Morley.

HSU dominated play the entire game, with the ball hardly ever going into the Austin College offensive end, but the Kangaroos were able to counter off a HSU corner kick as Natalie Nelms sent a long ball to the speedy Emma Treu who had the whole field in front of her, she carried it down the field and hit it past Cowgirl keeper Christi Carr to tie the game at the 60:39 mark.

The Cowgirls had a few chances and then finally Thigpen took the ball in the middle of the 18 box and fired a shot to the lower right corner past a diving Kaitlin Elledge.

HSU outshot Austin College 23-3 in the match and 9-2 on goal.

With the win HSU improved to 1-1 and Austin College fell to 2-1-1. HSU will play Rhodes College on Saturday at noon.

Rhodes defeated East Texas Baptist, 2-1, in the second game of the day. Bridgette Nicholson had the game winner at 80:27 for Rhodes. Laura Fink scored the first goal of the game for Rhodes at the 31:35 mark and ETBU's Rebecca Davis tied the game at 62:28.
