ABILENE, Texas — Freshman Taylor Thigpen scored her first
career goal in the 87th minute to propel the Hardin-Simmons
women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over ex-ASC rival Austin
College Friday morning in the first game of American Southwest
Conference- Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Soccer
Challenege at the HSU Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls had taken the lead in the final minute of the first
half when Sarah Stansell headed in a corner kick from Jordan
Morley.
HSU dominated play the entire game, with the ball hardly ever
going into the Austin College offensive end, but the Kangaroos were
able to counter off a HSU corner kick as Natalie Nelms sent a long
ball to the speedy Emma Treu who had the whole field in front of
her, she carried it down the field and hit it past Cowgirl keeper
Christi Carr to tie the game at the 60:39 mark.
The Cowgirls had a few chances and then finally Thigpen took the
ball in the middle of the 18 box and fired a shot to the lower
right corner past a diving Kaitlin Elledge.
HSU outshot Austin College 23-3 in the match and 9-2 on goal.
With the win HSU improved to 1-1 and Austin College fell to 2-1-1.
HSU will play Rhodes College on Saturday at noon.
Rhodes defeated East Texas Baptist, 2-1, in the second game of the
day. Bridgette Nicholson had the game winner at 80:27 for Rhodes.
Laura Fink scored the first goal of the game for Rhodes at the
31:35 mark and ETBU's Rebecca Davis tied the game at
62:28.
