ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer
team scored a goal in the second overtime to defeat Ambler Avenue
rival Abilene Christian, 2-1, in non-conference action at the HSU
Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening.
Both teams had several scoring chances as the teams combined for 51
shots, with 23 of them being on goal. HSU hit the crossbar three
times in the last minute of the game and overtime.
HSU got the last chance though, as Katie Kuykendall sent in a
perfect ball that Cowgirl sweeper Carlyn Powers hammered into the
net for the Golden Goal.
“Both teams went into the game thinking they could attack,
and that proved to be the case,” said Hardin-Simmons head
coach Marcus Wood. “Both teams played hard and we really came
up with a big goal there to win it. We pride ourselves on our set
pieces and Carlyn (Powers) made a great play on the
ball.”
The Cowgirls had two chances in front of the net with around 1:30
to play in regulation, but Miranda Bersosa hit the crossbar and
Austin Ricker's shot was saved by Crissy Lawson. Lawson saved
another Cowgirl shot with :30 to go in regulation.
Both keepers were brilliant in the game as Lawson had nine saves
and Christi Carr had 13.
The Cowgirls got on the board first with a Taylor Thigpen goal in
the 32nd minute. Katie Kuykendall assisted on that goal.
ACU came right back and tied the game in the 41st minute on a goal
by Lexi Stirling on an assist from Jordan Reese.
HSU is now 3-1 on the year and is riding a three-game winning
streak. ACU fell to 2-3 and they are on a three-game losing streak.
HSU opens American Southwest Conference play on Friday against
LeTourneau in Longview.
