Hardin-Baylor pounded out 439 yards on the ground and they beat No.
8 Hardin-Simmons for the ninth straight time, 42-28, in American
Southwest Conference action at Tiger Field in Belton on Saturday
night.
UMHB took advantage of an early HSU fumble and Kyle Noack
scored on a 2-yard run to give the Cru a 7-0 lead at the 12:21 mark
of the first quarter. HSU scored two plays later to make it 7-7 on
a Rockwell 3-yard run after a 52-yard pass from Justin Feaster to
Travis Tatsch.
Rockwell gave the Cowboys a 14-7 lead with a 14-yard run with
5:28 to play in the first quarter. HSU led 14-7 after the first
quarter, but the Cru scored 21 straight points. Blake Dempsey,
Quincy Daniels and LiDarral Bailey all had short TD runs to make it
28-14 UMHB at the half. HSU did not have a first down in the second
quarter.
The Cru missed a 53-yard field goal on its first drive of the
second half and the Cowboys went 64 yards in three plays. Feaster
hit ZaVious Robbins on a 49-yard TD pass to make it 28-21 with 9:38
to go in the third quarter.
UMHB answered with a 9-play, 70-yard drive all on the ground and
Darius Wilson scored from six yards out to make it 35-21.
HSU cut the deficit to 35-28 with 10:34 to play when Feaster hit
Thomas Labian on a 24-yard touchdown pass. That TD moved him past
Jordan Neal for first on the HSU touchdown passing charts with
73.
UMHB went 60 yards in nine plays and Bailey scored from 16 yards
out with 6:09 to play. HSU was driving again but Feaster was picked
for the third time in the game.
HSU is now 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in ASC play. UMHB is 3-0 and
2-0 in ASC action. HSU plays at home against East Texas Baptist
next week.
UMHB converted 9-of-16 third-downs in the game and HSU converted
just 1-of-9. Robbins had five catches for 119 yards.
Darius Wilson led the Cru with 190 yards rushing and Bailey
added 138. UMHB had 525 yards and HSU had 334.
