Cowboys Drop Third Straight

Box Score

MARSHALL, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' football team dropped its third straight game losing 26-22 to East Texas Baptist on Saturday night in American Southwest Conference action at Ornelas Field in Marshall.

The Cowboys once again had a tough third quarter. Scott Newberry hit a 28-yard field goal with 11:21 to play in the third quarter to give HSU a 22-6 lead, but it was all Tigers after that.

It was the first time in 12 tries that ETBU has beaten Hardin-Simmons.

Sed Harris started the ETBU rally with a 58-yard touchdown run with 10:33 to play in the third and then he hit Al Lewis on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 3:59 to play in the third to cut it to 22-20.

Jair Stover then scored the eventual game winning touchdown on a 4-yard run with 12:05 to play.

HSU opened the scoring with a 43-yard Scott Newberry field goal with 7:55 to play in the first quarter and Steven Rockwell made it 10-0 with 1:29 to play in the first quarter, capping an 11-play, 53-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Newberry hit a 36-yarded early in the second quarter to make it 13-0 and Brett Peddicord answered with an ETBU 28-yard field goal with 11:51 to play in the first half.

Rockwell scored again from four yards out with 6:42 to play in the half and the PAT was no good to make it 19-3 at halftime.

Newberry's three field goals tied the school record of Dusty Bigham and Matt Fields.

HSU had just 271 yards of total offense marking the first time since the ETBU game in 2009 they had fewer than 300 yards.  Taylor Byrd was 15-for-27 for 136 yards for the Cowboys.

ETBU rolled up 400 yards of offense, including 279 on the ground. Stover had 158 yards and Harris added 130.

HSU is now 2-3 and 0-3 in ASC play and ETBU improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in ASC action. HSU is 0-3 in ASC play for the first time ever. The Cowboys return home to play Howard Payne next weekend.
