Box Score ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' football team rolled up 613 yards of total offense en route to a 64-39 win over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference action at Jackson Field in Alpine.
The Cowboys ran for 428 yards in the game with the senior running back tandem of Steven Rockwell and Derrick Grant combined for 327 yards and six games. Rockwell had 167 yards and Grant had 160.
Zach Stewart was 12-for-26 for 185 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass to Travis Tatsch.
HSU jumped to a 16-7 lead after three drives. Scott Newberry hit his 10th field goal of the season to cap the first drive, Rockwell capped a 10-play, 59-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown and Grant scored from 13 yards out to make it 16-7 with 4:06 to play in the first quarter.
Sul Ross State received a 32-yard field goal from Lawrence Von Rumohr and J.P. Tillman answered for HSU with a 3-yard touchdown run in the Cowboys' first use of its Rhino package.
Former Cowboy player Scotty Walden then hit Thomas Sanders on a 26-yard touchdown pass to make it 22-17 at halftime.
HSU's defense opened the second half with a three and out and two plays later Stewart hit Tatsch on a 59-yard bomb. HSU then recovered an on-side kick and Rockwell converted it to a touchdown after 11 plays. Tatsch then later scored on a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 43-17 with 4:45 to play in the third quarter.
SRSU would not go away as Walden hit Lee Carothers on a 24-yard touchdown and then after a quick three and out by HSU, Dominique Carson scored on a 49-yard pass from Walden to make it 43-31 with 13:35 to play in the game.
Grant then broke off a 46-yard touchdown run and Carson answered with a 53-yard run. Grant had 12-yard touchdown run with 4:12 to play and Rockwell capped the scoring with a 38-yard run up the middle with 1:19 to play.
Carson had 168 yards on the ground and Walden hit 20-of-36 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. SRSU had 492 yards of offense, including 262 on the ground.
HSU is now 4-3 on the year and 2-3 in ASC play. Sul Ross State is 1-5 overall and 0-4 in ASC play. HSU returns home for homecoming next weekend against Texas Lutheran. That game time is set for 1:30, different from the usual 1 p.m. start.
