Box Score ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' football team closed out its season with a 41-27 win over Louisiana College in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.
The Cowboys jumped on the board in the first quarter after Undra Hendrix blocked a Louisiana College punt and HSU went 17 yards in three plays all on runs by Derrick Grant. Grant capped it with an 8-yard touchdown run.
HSU turned a Caleb Christian interception into seven more points. Steven Rockwell capped a 9-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, the first of four for him on the day at the 1:11 mark of the first quarter.
It was LC's turn to score a special teams touchdown when Landon Henry picked up a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown to make it 14-7. HSU made it 20-7 with 9:53 to play in the second half on a 9-yard touchdown run. The PAT was blocked.
Darnell Williams closed it to 20-14 scored on a 11-yard touchdown from Jamie Bunting with :37 to play in the first half.
HSU received another special teams score when Jamie Bunting's punt hit his up man and Garrison Hardin picked it up and returned it 64 yards for a score. Travis Tatsch ran in the 2-point conversion and HSU led 28-14 with 1:54 to play in the third quarter.
Bunting answered quickly with a 72-yard TD pass to Williams to make it 28-21.
HSU made it 35-21 with 13:03 to play when Rockwell scored from four yards out and LC scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 35-27.
HSU iced the game with a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:23 to play. The run gave Rockwell 2,500 yards for his career. Derrick Grant also went over 2,500 yards for his career, finishing with 2,552 yards. They finished third and fourth in HSU history in rushing yards.
The Cowboys sent out 22 seniors with a final win. Caleb Christian had 12 tackles and interception and recovered a blocked punt. Nate Jantzen had 16 tackles to lead LC and Taylor Cottano had 15.
The Cowboys close the season with a record of 6-4, which extends its streak of consecutive winning seasons to 20. HSU is 4-4 in ASC action. LC fell to 7-3 overall and 5-3 in ASC action.
