Cowgirls Advance In NCAA Soccer Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' second-ranked women's soccer team advanced to the second round of the Division III Women's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 win over Chapman on Saturday afternoon at Paul McGinley Field in San Antonio.

The Cowgirls scored the only goal of the game just 9:52 into the game when Katie Kuykendall dished her 22nd assist of the year to Taylor Thigpen. Thigpen hit a bomb from about 40 yards out for her ninth goal of the year.
HSU had two other golden opportunities in the first half but twice a Chapman defender saved a shot on the line.

The Cowgirls out shot Chapman 19-6 in the game and 7-3 on goal. HSU also had a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Chapman's had two great changes about :30 apart. Val Sobol had a shot that Lexi Stinson was able to punch away for a corner kick. The corner kick was also punched away by Stinson. It was the two best scoring attempts of the day for Chapman.

Stinson had three saves in the game to earn the shutout.

HSU improved to 18-0-1 on the year and Chapman concluded its year with a record of 16-6-1. The Cowgirls will play Trinity at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Trinity beat Puget Sound, 1-0 on Saturday.

The two teams tied 1-1 earlier in the season and have met nine times in the NCAA Tournament and are tied 4-4-1.
