Cowgirls Rally To Sweep Roos

SHERMAN, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader at Austin College on Tuesday evening, winning the first game 6-0 and using a three-run seventh-inning rally in a 6-5 win in the nightcap.

Blair Wallace had a big game for the Cowgirls in the first games. She had an RBI double in the first inning and had a solo home run in the third inning. She also pitched her third shutout of the year to improve to 8-3. She scattered five hits in the game.

Julia Bradley had a two-run double in the third and Kelsey Evans had an RBI fielder's choice and Taylor Namey had an RBI double in the fourth inning for HSU.

Namey set the school record for runs scored with her 115th in the first game. Wallace had three hits and Amy Meyer and Mac Clay had two hits each.

In the second game, Suzanne Beltran had a two-run single and Chelsea Delaney had an RBI single in a three-run first for Austin College. In the third inning Amy Meyer had an RBI double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to make it 3-2.

AC answered with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on a Delaney RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Mallory Rossman.

HSU picked up a run in the sixth on a Carley Willis sacrifice fly and Meyer had a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning to chase starter Amanda Peiser.

Peiser allowed four runs on eight hits in six-plus innings. Amber Pemberton relieved her with nobody out in the seventh and she allowed a single by Blair Wallace, got a fly out by Taylor Namey, walked Julia Bradley and then Strickland had two-run double to rally the Cowgirls.

Sarah Shurbet started and went three innings and allowed five runs on five hits. Blair Wallace came in and worked four shutout innings to earn her second win of the day and improve to 9-3 on the year.

Strickland, Meyer and Shelby McIntyre had a pair of hits for the Cowgirls. Meyer and Strickland drove in two runs each.

HSU is now 15-7 on the year and Austin College is now 5-19 on the year. HSU returns to American Southwest Conference action on Friday as it starts a four-game set at home against Schreiner.
