Cowboys Fall To No. 5 Linfield

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. — Hardin-Simmons' football team went on the road and dropped a hard-fought 49-35 game to No. 5 Linfield on Saturday afternoon at Maxwell Field in McMinnville. 

Hardin-Simmons fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss and Linfield improved to 2-0. HSU returns home to play Texas College at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Shelton Stadium.

Linfield came out and took the opening kickoff 61 yards in four plays and Josh Yoder scored from six yards out to make it 7-0 with 9:08 to play in the first half. HSU tied the game with a 41-yard drive. Tevin Mitchell punched it home from a yard out to tie the game at 7-7.

Linfield scored on a 4-yard pass from Mickey Inns to Westy Meng with 11:33 to play in the second quarter. HSU came right back to tie the game. Arsenio Glenn caught an acrobatic two-yard touchdown pass after Logan Turner had hit Trei Lewis on a 50-yard pass to set up the score.

The Cowboys then took the lead with 2:34 to play in the first half when Turner found Lewis from 12 yards out to cap a 12-play 71-yard drive.

HSU had a chance to go into the halftime locker room with the lead but the Wildcats converted a third and long when Inns found Charlie Poppen for 26 yards and on the next play scored on a 31-yard screen pass to Josh Hill to make it 21-21 at halftime.

The Cowboys took the ball first in the second half and drove down the field but had to settle for a field goal and the 32-yarder was blocked.

Both teams traded punts and then Linfield went 71 yards in five plays and Roder capped it with a 1-yard TD run. On HSU's next possession Turner was sacked by Mike Nardoni and fumbled and the Wildcats recovered. Linfield scored on a 31-yard pass on the next play and took a 35-21 lead. HSU then had to punt and the Wildcats went 60 yards in five plays and Inns hit Lucas Jepson on a 17-yard pass to make it 42-21 with 1:09 to play in the third quarter. David Sigler scored on a 5-yard pass from Josh Yoder to make it 49-21.

Turner hit Glenn on an 18-yard touchdown on HSU's next possession and then HSU recovered an on-side kick, but Turner was sacked and fumbled again on the next possession. Linfield drove it done and was stuffed on a goal line stand by Undra Hendrix.

HSU took the ball 97 yards for another score as Turner capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Lewis.

The Cowboys rolled up 503 yards of offense and Linfield had 563 in the offensive shootout. Turner had a solid day for HSU completing 29-of-53 passes for 353 yards and four touchdowns. Lewis had nine catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns and Glenn had 11 catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

Tevin Mitchell had 162 yards on 30 carries. Defensively, Brandon Scott had 11 tackles as did Hendrix. Three of Hendrix's tackles were for loss, including a sack. Jay Wise had 10 tackles and an interception.

Kyle Wright had 12 tackles for Linfield. Hill had 149 yards on 19 carries and Inns completed 26-of-41 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns.
