Cowgirls Push Streak To Five With Sweep of Concordia

AUSTIN, Texas  — Hardin-Simmons' softball team pushed its winning streak to five game with an American Southwest Conference doubleheader sweep of Concordia, 4-3 and 8-0, on Friday evening at Old Settler's Park.

Game 1

Hardin-Simmons scored three runs in the top of the seventh to rally for the win. Sarah Truelove started the inning with a double to left center and Nathalie De La Torre reached on a fielder's choice that cut down Truelove. Jayme Ashley reached on an error and Katelyn Joyner popped up. Mac Clay walked to load the bases with two outs and Sydnie Darden had a two-run single to left to tie the game. Carley Willis followed with an RBI single.

Concordia threatened in the seventh when Sydney Coffey led off with a triple, but she left the base early on a Katie Carrizales fly out.

The Tornados had taken a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and another in the third. Hanna Contreras had an RBI single in the third and Alexis Lynn had an RBI groundout and Valerie Gonzales an RBI fielder's choice in the second.

HSU scored in the fourth when Darden led off with a triple and scored on a Kara LeLeux sacrifice fly.

Lara Ammermann started and went four innings for the Cowgirls. Keeley Lowrance came on and worked three scoreless innings for the win to improve to 5-2. Coffey went the distance for Concordia scattering nine hits and allowing just one earned run.

Darden had three hits for the Cowgirls and Ashley and Willis added two. Jenna Franz had two hits for Concordia.

Game 2

HSU scored a run in the first on a Brayleigh Middleton RBI single. HSU scored three times in the third. Lauren Williams had an RBI single and Ashley had a two-run single in the inning.

HSU added three runs in the fourth inning. Kara LeLeux had a two-run single and Middleton added an infield RBI single.

The Cowgirls put the run rule in play with an RBI single by Williams in the sixth.  

Mac Clay, Willis, LeLeux, Middleton and Lauren Williams all had two hits for HSU. LeLeux, Middleton, Williams and Ashley each drove in two runs.

Emily Hardaway tossed a two-hit shutout for the Cowgirls, striking out five. She is now 2-3 on the year. Zalysa Perez took the loss allowing seven runs on 11 hits in four innings.

HSU is now 7-7 on the year and 5-6 in ASC play. Concordia fell to 8-8 overall and 6-5 in league play. The teams have moved their game schedule for noon on Saturday to 10 a.m.
