LONGVIEW, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's tennis team opened the season by splitting a pair of matches on the road, falling 8-1 at East Texas Baptist and winning 9-0 over LeTourneau in non-conference action.
The Cowgirls fell 8-1 in the morning match at East Texas Baptist.
Shayne Cook was the only Cowgirl to pick up a win. She beat Kate Bramlett, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Hannah and
Jenna Smith each dropped three-set matches.
In the late afternoon match the Cowgirls defeated LeTourneau 9-0. HSU swept the doubles matches to take early control. The Smith sisters, Hannah and Jenna won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and Cook and
Laura Weinheimer won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Megan Carlson and
Jasmine Briant won by forfeit.
In singles action, Michael Ellison won 6-1, 6-3 over Rachel Morriseau. Zabra Zullo won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Kacie Berutti won 7-6 (10-6), 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Carlson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.

Elizabeth Lopez won their first collegiate matches by forfeit.
HSU is 1-1 on the year and will play at Texas-Tyler on Sunday at 10 a.m.
