Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team remained undefeated with a record-setting performance in a 54-15 homecoming win over Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium in front of 3,846 fans.
The Cowboys set a school record for completion percentage in a game by completing 35-of-38 passes for 413 yards.
Ryan Breton also set the school record for completion percentage by going 21-for-22 for 299 yards and two scores.
It was a big day all the way around for the Cowboys as the special teams scored a pair of touchdowns,
Conlan Aguirre scored on a 64-yard blocked field goal return and
Alex Bell returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score.
Sophomore quarterback
Luke Bishop scored three times on the ground on runs of two, seven and 20 yards.
HSU's defense forced a quick punt on the first possession of the game and the Cowboys went 68 yards in seven plays, with
Jaquan Hemphill capping it with a 3-yard touchdown run.
The defense forced another quick punt and the Cowboys went 42 yards in five plays as Breton hit Bell for a 12-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.
Hunter Creasey blocked a field goal and Aguirre scooped it up and went 64 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 with 14:11 to play in the first half. The Cowboys scored on their next possession on Bishop's first TD and then HPU answered when Trey Potter hit Derrick Williams for a 64-yard touchdown.
Bell then returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to give HSU a 35-7 halftime lead.
Bishop scored to cap the first drive of the second half and after a fourth-down stop Breton hit
Alex Bell on a perfectly placed 70-yard strike to make it 48-7 with 7:17 to play in the third quarter.
Each team scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to give the Cowboys a 54-15 win. HSU improved to 6-0 on the year and 3-0 in ASC play. HPU fell to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
HSU had 536 yards of offense and held the Yellow Jackets to 326, including only 88 in the air.
Reese Childress had 11 catches for 123 yards,
Garrett Martin had 10 catches for 96 yards and Bell caught eight balls for 154 yards.
Cory Ward had 11 tackles for the Cowboys and Jason Disney led the Yellow Jackets with 15.
HSU will play at third ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor next week in a battle of ASC unbeatens.
