Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – Hardin-Simmons' football team moved to 7-1 with a 55-21 win over future conference opponent Belhaven on Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Miss.
The Cowboys came out early and took control of the game. After a Belhaven fumble, the Cowboys went 33 yards in five plays and
Jaquan Hemphill scored on a 15-yard touchdown from
Ryan Breton. HSU then forced a fourth-down turnover by the Blazers at the BU 14-yard line and the Cowboys scored two plays later on an 8-yard pass to
Alex Bell from Breton.
HSU scored touchdowns on its first six possession and scored on 7-of-8 possessions in the first half to take a 45-7 halftime lead.
Reese Childress scored on a 37-yard pass from Breton and
Garrett Martin scored on a 36-yard pass from
Weston Garner.
Luke Bishop and Breton had touchdown runs and
Nico Francino kicked a 38-yard field goal on the last play of the half.
Both teams were more content to keep the ball on the ground more in the second half and Francino hit another field goal from 22 yards out and
Justin Woodard added a 2-yard run to set up the Cowboys final scoring total.
Hunter McEachern had a pair of TD passes for the Blazers in the second half.
HSU's quarterbacks combined to go 22-of-28 for 346 yards and the Cowboys had 309 yards rushing for 655 yards of total offense.
Shaun Williams had 91 yards rushing and
Luke Bishop added 83. Breton was 18-of-22 for 312 yards and three touchdowns passing and ran for another score. Childress had six catches for 187 yards and a touchdown.
Matthew Hawkins led the Cowboys with nine tackles.
Phillip Fuentes added two interceptions.
Hunter McEachern was 48-of-75 for 415 yards and three touchdowns for the Blazers.
The Cowboys are 7-1 and will play East Texas Baptist next week at 2 p.m. Hal Mumme's Blazers fell to 1-7 on the year.
