ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's tennis team picked up its biggest win in several years with a 7-2 win over UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon at the Streich Tennis Center.
The Cowgirls also played at Abilene Christian in the morning and lost 7-0 to the Division I Wildcats.
HSU is now 2-2 on the year and both wins have come against teams ranked in the West region rankings. The Patriots are ranked No. 7 in the region and ETBU was ranked No. 10.
The win over UT Tyler was the first since Feb. 21, 2009.
"I am proud of the girls," said HSU head coach Shane Williford. "UT Tyler has been our nemesis and this group of seniors had never beaten them, so for them to come out and take care of business shows that we have a team that is capable of doing great things. We have five seniors in the lineup and they just battled every match."
The Cowgirls took command of the match in doubles with three wins.
Shayne Cook and
Michaela Ellison won 8-4 at No. 1,
Kyra Mobley and
Jasmine Briant won a tiebreaker for a 9-8 win at No. 2 and Hannah and
Jenna Smith won 8-3 at No. 3 to set the tone for singles play.
In singles, the Cowgirls received wins from Cook, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1,
Jenna Smith won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3
Hannah Smith won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 and
Jasmine Briant won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
In the match with ACU, the Wildcats rolled to the doubles point and then won all six singles matches in straight sets.
ACU is now 3-3 on the year and UT Tyler is 1-2.
HSU will return to action next weekend when it hosts Concordia and Howard Payne for a pair of non-conference counting matches.
