ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Hardin-Simmons' women's tennis teams split its first two matches on its spring break trip to southern California, falling 6-3 to California Institute of Technology and winning 9-0 over Chapman.
On Saturday evening, Caltech came away with a 2-1 lead after three close double matches. Hannah and
Jenna Smith won 9-7 at No. 3 for the Cowgirls and
Shayne Cook and
Michaela Ellison fell 9-7 at No. 1 and
Jasmine Briant and
Kyra Mobley fell 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Cook rolled to an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and Briant won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. The Smith sisters both lost in three sets and Ellison and
Lexie Graham fell in straight sets.
In the match against Chapman on Sunday morning, the Cowgirls had no problems getting back on track. HSU dropped just on game in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles play and No. 3 doubles won by default.
In singles play, HSU won all five matches that were played in straight sets with
Hannah Smith and Briant each winning 6-0. 6-0.
Cook was named the player of the day for both days by the coaching staff.
HSU is now 7-4 on the year. Chapman fell to 0-5 and Caltech fell to 5-4. The trip continues on Monday with a match against Vassar College out of New York in Claremont, Calif., at 11 a.m. CST.
