SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team opened the season with a 42-33 win on the road on Saturday at Trinity University in San Antonio.

Marc Reed, who was making his first career start, put the game away with a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:00 to play. The sophomore from Round Rock ran for 124 yards and a touchdown and completed 9-of-14 passes for 107 yards and two more scores.

The Cowboys used a dominating running game to take control of the game. Senior all-America running back had 258 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.

HSU's defense came up big in the fourth quarter as well. The Cowboys did not allow first down in the fourth quarter and Dedrick Strambler had an interception in the end zone.

The Cowboys started the season with a 7-play, 75-yard drive and Matthew Sandoval capped it with a 44-yard touchdown reception from Reed. New kicker Jamie Pogue converted the first of six PATs to make it 7-0.

Trinity answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Wyatt Messex to Matt Thompson to tie the game. Zai Zai Smtih capped off another HSU touchdown drive in the first quarter with an 11-yard run.

The Cowboys took a 21-7 lead midway through the first half on an 8-yard touchdown run by Hemphill. A short field led to a quick touchdown by the Tigers to make it 21-14.

Hemphill capped a 65-yard drive for the Cowboys with a 19-yard touchdown to give the Cowboys a 28-20 lead before halftime. However, another penalty on the kickoff set the Tigers in prime position and they hit a 37-yard touchdown from Messex to Cash Crane and the PAT was no go to make it 28-20 with :19 to play in the first half.

Trinity scored on the first drive of the third quarter at 10-yard run by Messex and again the PAT failed.  HSU quickly went 65 yards in six plays as Reed hit Reese Childress on a 9-yard touchdown pass.

Trinity came right back with a 9-yard touchdown from Messex to Thompson and again the PAT was no good and HSU clung to a 35-33 lead with 5:43 to play in the third quarter.

HSU had 560 yards of offense and held the Tigers to 299 on the night.

The Cowboys are now 1-0 and Trinity fell to 1-1. HSU will open American Southwest Conference play next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Louisiana College.
