Cowboys, Hemphill, Pogue Break School Records As Cowboys Retain Wilford Moore Trophy

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team set a school record for points in a game in a 91-29 win over crosstown rival McMurry to retain the Wilford Moore Trophy on Saturday at Shelton Stadium.

The only time the Cowboys didn't score a touchdown the first 13 times they had the ball was a 1-play drive to end the first half, other than that scored 12 straight possessions. The defense limited the War Hawks to 33 yards in the first half.  

The Cowboys set a school record by averaging 12.4 yards per play in the game with 732 yards on 59 plays.

HSU forced the War Hawks to a punt on the first drive of the game and on the first offensive play from scrimmage Kyle Jones hit Rae Millsap on a 45-yard touchdown pass and the rout was on.  McMurry lost four yards on its next drive and the Cowboys went 59 yards in four plays with Jaquan Hemphill scoring on a 2-yard run.

It was the 52nd touchdown of Hemphill's career which set a new school record, passing the old mark of Kirk Rogers. Hemphill scored on a 12-yard pass from Jones on the next possession and Marc Reed scored on a 19-yard run to make the score 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Hayden Day scored on a 2-yard run, Hemphill added a 4-yard touchdown run and Jones scored on a 6-yard run to give the Cowboys a 49-0 lead at halftime.

Breon Simmons scored on a 5-yard pass from Jones and Bryson Hammonds had a 34-yard touchdown run to make the score 63-0 midway through the third quarter. McMurry scored its first points of the game on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Matt Heifner to Kevin Hurley.

HSU answered right back with a 63-yard touchdown from Jones to Jalen Crawford. McMurry kicked a field goal by Pablo Simental a 32-yarder with 1:52 to play in the third quarter.

Kolby Youngblood scored on the first play of the next drive for the Cowboys on a 61-yard run and David Wilson intercepted a pass and returned it 51-yards for a scored to make the score 84-9 :39 into the fourth quarter.

McMurry scored three times in the final 8:42 of the game on touchdown passes from backup Carlos Garibay. He hit Hurley on a 4-yard touchdown and Nicolas Porras on 15 and 45 yarders.

Crawford scored on a 46-yard pass for the Cowboys from Quay Stokes.

Kyle Jones went 17-of-23 for 362 yards and four touchdown passes. Youngblood had 109 yards on five carries. Millsap had 128 yards on four catches and Crawford added 124 yards on three catches.

Hunter Creasey had a huge game for the Cowboys with 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. He moved to within 3.5 sacks of tying the school record for sacks in a career.

Jamie Pogue broke the school record for PATs in a game with 13.

HSU is now 6-2 on the year and 5-2 in conference play. McMurry fell to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in league play. The Cowboys head to Marshall next week to play East Texas Baptist.
