Box Score BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team took down the Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru 1-0 in double overtime on Saturday night to secure the top spot for the American Southwest Conference tournament.
The Cowgirls and Cru always come down to the wire, and this year's regular season rendition was no different. The two teams played scoreless soccer through 90 minutes, sending the game to overtime.
The Cowgirls controlled the pace in the final minutes, and in the second overtime were awarded a penalty kick after a UMHB clearance led to a hand ball inside the box. Senior Madelyn Dowell punched in the PK for the clutch finish, icing the Cowgirl win 1-0 in Belton.
Dowell has now scored in the last four games, five goals total with four game-winners. The Cowgirls led with seven shots and five on goal. The Cru took five shots and put one on frame. UMHB led with four corner kicks to two for HSU.
Kendall Dowling stepped up for the Cowgirls with another shutout win in the 106 minutes of play with a lone save. The Cru keeper Reagan Williams had three saves on the night.
The Cowgirls move up to 12-2 on the year and 9-0 in ASC play while UMHB falls to 11-3-1 and 6-2-1 in the conference. The Cowgirls clinch the ASC No. 1 seed with the win and will finish the regular season against that other Abilene team down south on the road Friday night at 5 p.m.
