Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' eighth-ranked football team moved to 9-1 with a 65-0 win over Texas Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.
HSU forced a punt on the opening possession and drove 36 yards and Jamie Pogue hit a 25-yard field goal to tie the school career record with his 21st make.
On the next drive, HSU scored on the first play when Kai Brinkerhoff scored on a 38-yard pass from Kyle Jones. Cale Nanny had a 20-yard touchdown on the next drive and Jonathan Castaneda scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to make the score 23-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Kevi Evans scored on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jones and Gatlin Martin added a 46-yard touchdown reception from Jones to give HSU a 37-0 lead at halftime.
Castaneda scored on another 1-yard run to cap a 10-play, 70-yard drive to start the second half.
HSU added a 28-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Martin, Davonte Nephew scored on a 49-yard interception return and Marc Reed scored on a 4-yard run.
Nephew and Tre Allen had interceptions for the Cowboys. Nephew returned his for a score and Allen returned his to the 1-yard line.
HSU rolled up 561 yards and held the Bulldogs to 146 yards in the contest. The shutout was the fourth of the season for the HSU defense.
Jones had 328 yards and five touchdown passes in the game for the Cowboys. Kolby Youngblood ran for 124 yards. The defense had eight tackles for loss in the game.
The Cowboys finish the year at 9-1 overall and 8-1 in ASC play. TLU fell to 3-7 overall and 3-6 in league action.
HSU has made its case and its postseason fate is in the hands of the NCAA Division III Selection Committee. The Cowboys are in contention for one of the five at-large berths into the NCAA playoffs. The bracket will be announced at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday on NCAA.com.
