Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team moved to 2-0 on the year with a 33-14 win over Texas Lutheran on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.
HSU took the opening kickoff and drove 79 yards in 10 plays as Kyle Jones hit Matthew Sandoval on a 28-yard touchdown pass.
The Cowboy defense came back with a stop and the Cowboys hit for the big play as Kyle Jones hit Cade Bell, who made a couple of defenders miss and then raced 71 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 with 4:41 to play in the first quarter.
HSU's special forces came up big on the next possession as Bryce Hergert came through to block Justice Porter's punt and then tackled Porter in the end zone for a safety.
Jamie Pogue gave the Cowboys a 19-0 lead with a 33-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
TLU scored on a 21 yard-touchdown pass from Wade Freeman to Mason Perkins to cut the deficit to 19-7, which was the halftime score.
Kyle Jones added a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Seth Cosme had a 1-yard touchdown run for TLU early in the fourth quarter.
HSU outgained the Bulldogs 390-295 in the contest and the defense held TLU to 4-of-13 on third down.
Kyle Jones was 12-of-19 for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Myles Featherston had 61 rushing yards and Marc Reed added 59 for the Cowboys.
Zach Goodson and Caleb Bell led the defense with six tackles each.
HSU is 2-0 on the year and will host Howard Payne next week at 1 p.m. at Shelton Stadium. TLU fell to 2-1 on the season.
