Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team won 5-1 against the St. Thomas Celts on Friday night at the HSU Soccer Complex in the season opener.
The Cowgirls came out fast with a goal in the second minute from Jenna Kirk, who headed the ball in off a Cowgirl corner from Alexis Sciano.
Mercy Mummert lobbed a ball into the back of the net from across the box in the 17th minute to get the Cowgirls up 2-0. Caroline Pool dropped the ball off to Emma Thompson who finished it for a goal in the 21st minute to make it 3-0 HSU.
The Celts came out with some fire in the second half and scored in the 46th minute off the foot of Emily McCoy to make it 3-1.
The Cowgirls had a ridiculous retaliation to follow, with Kirk scoring another goal from a Madelyn Dowell corner in the 49th minute and Randie Dennison going for goal just 20 second later off another dime from Pool, putting the Cowgirls up 5-1 for the big victory.
The Cowgirls shot 26 times and put 14 on frame with four assists in the game while St. Thomas shot 10 times with four on goal. The Cowgirl had 10 corners to the Celt four.
Haley Foley started in the goal for the Cowgirls and had a pair of saves in 79 minutes of action. She was relieved by Kendall Dowling who had a nice save in 10 minutes of action.
The Celts started Carmen Lozada who had four saves in 50 minutes and Sadie Penney finished with five saves and no goals allowed in the last 40 minutes.
Cowgirl soccer starts the year 1-0 and will travel to Trinity in San Antonio on Sunday night for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
