Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' seventh-ranked football team shut out Wayland Baptist, 49-0, to open the season on Saturday evening at a steamy Shelton Stadium.
The Cowboys took their second possession of the game 86 yards in five plays as Kyle Jones found Gatlin Martin for a 14-yard touchdown pass to take the early lead. Jones also had passes of 40 and 14 yards to Kai Brinkerhoff on the drive.
Jamie Pogue made the PAT and that gave him 155 for his career making him the all-time HSU record holder for PATs.
The Cowboy defense forced another punt and HSU rushed right back down the field and Jones hit Kevi Evans on a 19-yard circus catch. The ball was tipped in the air by the Wayland defense but right into the waiting arms of Evans for the score.
HSU had another stop to start the second quarter. Jones was intercepted on the next drive but Martin made a great hustle play to tackle Kaleb Thornton who had returned the interception 58 yards to the seven-yard line. The defense stood up with a sack and two incomplete passes and then Jamel LaFond and blocked a field goal attempt.
Colton Carter had a 51-yard reception on the ensuing possession to set up a Cale Nanny 12-yard touchdown reception from Jones that made it 21-0 with 8:40 to play in the first half.
HSU added a 12-yard touchdown run by Gaylon Glynn and Kai Brinkerhoff had an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jones to give the Cowboys a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Jonathan Castaneda had a 13-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter from Jones and Colton Marshall had his first career touchdown with 4:27 to play in the game.
The Cowboys had 568 yards of offense and held the Pioneers to 283, including just 10 yards on the ground.
Jones was 21-for-30 for 316 yards and five touchdown passes in the game. The Cowboys had 15 different players catch a pass. Cade Michna and Matt Mitchell had six tackles each for the Cowboys and Khristion Little and Nathaniel Finch had 1.5 sacks each.
The Cowboys will play at Sul Ross State next Saturday in the ASC opener at 4 p.m. in Alpine.
