Cowboys Wallop War Hawks To Retain Wilford Moore Trophy

Box Score

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team retained the Wilford Moore Trophy as the Cowboys wore down and overpowered crosstown rival McMurry, 45-13, on Saturday afternoon at McMurry.

The War Hawks took the opening kickoff and put together a time-consuming nine-play, 32-yard drive that took 6:01 off the clock but eventually resulted in a turnover on downs. HSU took the ball and marched 66 yards in eight plays and Colton Marshall capped off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run.

On McMurry's second drive, it was more of the ball control. McMurry ran out the rest of the first quarter and had a 11:27-3:33 advantage in time of possession in the first quarter. The drive ended after 15 straight runs with only one being for more than five yards and it took 8:57 off the clock. Jared Mendoza put the War Hawks on the board with a 38-yard field goal.

HSU came right back and drove 71 yards in seven plays and Gaylon Glynn hit Kai Brinkerhoff on a 13-yard pass for a touchdown. Brinkerhoff carried a couple of defenders the final four yards for the touchdown.

The Cowboy defense forced a quick three-and-out and the snap on the punt was over the punter's head and HSU took over at the McMurry seven. They settled for a Grayson Bearden field goal of 26-yards to push the lead to 17-3. Drew Hagler answered for McMurry with a 54-yard touchdown run to cut the HSU lead to 17-10 with 1:54 to play in the first half.

Glynn then executed a late drive for the Cowboys with four straight completions and hit Gatlin Martin for a 19-yard highlight reel catch to take a 24-10 lead that would hold until halftime.

The Cowboy defense came up big on McMurry's first possession as Dee Wheat picked off Dexter Wyble. Glynn made the War Hawks pay for the mistake as he hit Kevi Evans on a 69-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 31-10.

Marshall had a 3-yard touchdown run and Evans scored on a 42-yard touchdown pass to round out the Cowboys' scoring. Mendoza hit a late meaningless field goal with :32 to play for McMurry.

Glynn hit 19-of-27 passes for 314 yards and four scores. Martin had six catches for 103 yards and Evans five catches for 139 yards.

HSU ran just 52 plays on offense but averaged a whopping 8.2 yards per play and outgained the War Hawks 428-260.

Khristion Little and Jim Hitchcock led the Cowboys with eight tackles each. Cason Hanna had seven tackles in his first career start. Terrell Franklin had seven tackles and an interception.

HSU is now 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in league play. McMurry fell to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in ASC play. HSU hosts Sul Ross State next week at 1 p.m. at Shelton Stadium.
