Cowboys Lasso Lobos, 70-35

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team won a shootout with Sul Ross State, 70-35, in American Southwest Conference action at Shelton Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Lobos took the opening kick and went 77 yards in eight plays and Jermius Johnson capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Colton Marshall came right back with a 3-yard touchdown run for the Cowboys to cap a 51-yard, 8-play drive.

Justin Bingham came up with an interception for the Cowboys on the next drive and HSU went 49 yards in five plays and Myles Featherston capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.

Austin Ogunmakin scored on a 1-yard sneak for the Lobos to tie the game. After a Cowboy punt, the Lobos went 91 yards in six plays and Kendrick Jefferson scored on a 30-yard catch from Trent Graves to give Sul Ross State a 21-14 lead with 12:48 to play in the second quarter.

Kevi Evans set the Cowboys with a 63-yard kickoff return and Marshall ended the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 21. On the ensuing kickoff, Givan Rhodes forced a fumble on the kick return and Trevor Higginbotham recovered it at the 15. Gaylon Glynn scored on a 1-yard run three plays later and the Cowboys regained the lead at 28-21 with 10:09 to play in the first half.

Torii Pullen recovered a fumble on the next possession for the Cowboys and HSU scored two plays later on a Featherston 22-yard run. The Cowboys forced a fourth-down stop and the Cowboys added another score when Glynn hit Gatlin Martin for a 29-yard touchdown.

The moment was special for Martin, who changed his number this week to 32 to honor his good friend and teammate from high school Cason Grant who passed in an automobile accident this week.

The Cowboys scored its first points in the second half on a Kolby Youngblood 9-yard rush with 2:36 to play. Ogunmakin scored consecutive touchdowns for the Lobos on 28 and 40-yard touchdown catches from Martinez.

Marshall had a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter on 1 and 15-yard runs. The TDs sandwiched a Evans 36-yard touchdown catch over a defender from Glynn.

Marshall finished the day with 110 yards rushing and four touchdowns. It was his second career 100-yard game against Sul Ross State in his career. Myles Featherston added 90 yards rushing,

Glynn completed 17-of-21 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

Ogunmakin had 11 catches for 242 yards and two scores. Trent Graves completed 15-of-25 passes for 251 yards and Andrew Martinez added a 15-for-19 day with 187 yards and two more scores.

Terrell Franklin led the defense with 11 tackles and Jordan Hammonds added a career-best 10 tackles. The Cowboys had a season-best five sacks in the game and recorded 11 tackles for loss. Ronin Williams had 17 tackles for Sul Ross State.

Both teams had over 500 yards of offense. Sul Ross State had 545 on 85 plays and the Cowboys had 533 yards on 67 plays.

HSU is now 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in league play. Sul Ross State fell to 2-4 on the year and to 2-2 in league play.

The Cowboys will host East Texas Baptist at 1 p.m. as part of homecoming festivities next week.
