AUSTIN, Texas – Despite having players out sick, the Hardin-Simmons women's tennis team overcame the obstacles and battled back from an early deficit for a 7-2 win over Concordia on Saturday in American Southwest Conference action in Austin.
The Cowgirls lost at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and No, 1 doubles went to a tiebreaker and was down 3-0 before Laurel Coleman and Lauren Schaeffer won seven straight points to get the Cowgirls on the board.
HSU then won all six singles matches to take the dual.
Coleman won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Schaeffer won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2, Landry Laywell won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Jonnah Smith won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Skylar Rust and Taja Lawrence each stepped up and won third set pro sets to take their matches.
HSU won its fifth straight match to improve to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in ASC play. Concordia fell to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.
HSU will return to action on Friday against Sul Ross State.
