Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team won 2-0 against the St. Scholastica Saints on Thursday night at the HSU Soccer Complex in head coach Lance Key's first game at Hardin-Simmons.
The first Cowgirl performance under the new coaching staff of Key, joined by assistants Stephen Salas and Ashley Stamps, kicked off with a commanding first half. The Cowgirls led with 19 shots and eight on frame in the first half, allowing none for the Saints.
A ball was batted around the offensive third before Mercy Mummert corralled it for a serve into sophomore transfer Kirsten Bush, who finished with a header to take the Cowgirl lead 1-0 in the 41st minute.
The Saints held off the Cowgirls to start the second half until another Cowgirl newcomer, junior transfer Kaylen McNatt, played a ball up to Randie Dennison for a finish across the box and into the corner for the second Cowgirl goal in the 58th minute. HSU would hold on to claim the victory in their first game of the season 2-0.
HSU out-shot the Saints 22-4 with ten Cowgirl shots on goal and two on frame for St. Scholastica. The Cowgirls had eight corners to two from the opposition.
Senior Haley Foley started in goal and had two saves in a well-defended Cowgirl night. Brianna Jorgenson had her work cut out for her against the Cowgirls and notched some impressive saves for the Saints, totaling seven in the match.
The Cowgirls move to 1-0 on the season and with Coach Key's staff. They will return to the HSU Soccer Complex on Saturday night in primetime for an 8 p.m. match with Wis.-Whitewater.
