Cowboys Fall To Cru In ASC Showdown

Box Score

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team fell 50-20 to Mary Hardin-Baylor in a matchup of top 10 teams on Saturday at Shelton Stadium.

Jalen Crawford took the opening kickoff 54 yards for the Cowboys to set up great field position and Noah Garcia carried three times for 45 yards and capped the drive off with a 12-yard touchdown run. Both teams then traded punts and UMHB scored on a 30-yard field goal by Anthony Avila.

Tommy Bowden picked off Gaylon Glynn on the next series and he ran it back to the 4-yard yard line but the defense stiffened and Avila had to settle for another short field goal of 21 yards to tie the game at 6-6.

HSU took a 13-6 lead in the start of the second quarter on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Glynn to Kevi Evans, but the Cru came right back and Kyle King hit Jerry Day on a 44-yard touchdown pass.

After a Cowboy fumble, UMHB kicked another short field goal from 23 yards out to make the score 16-13. HSU answered back in two plays when Glynn hit Kevi Evans on a 74-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-16 with 4:36 to go in the half.

UMHB's K.J. Miller return the kickoff 85 yards to the HSU 3-yard line and Brandon Jordan scored on a 4-yard touchdown pass from King and the PAT was blocked by Braden Hargrove to make the score 22-20.

The game turned when the Cowboys fumbled on the next two possessions and both were returned for touchdowns by the Cru from 25 and 33 yards out and the lead went to 36-20. HSU had a chance to get on the board right before half but Grayson Bearden's 41-yard field goal hit off the upright.

The Cowboys did not score in the second half and UMHB added two third-quarter touchdown runs by Kenneth Cormier, Jr.

UMHB outgained the Cowboys 419-312 in the contest, but the four turnovers turned out to be too much for the Cowboys to overcome.

King completed 21-of-31 passes for 245 yards and two scores and Miller had 11 catches for 99 yards. Glynn was 8-for-17 for 154 yards and two scores. Evans had five catches for 136 yards and two scores.

Jamel LaFond and Terrell Franklin had nine tackles each for HSU. Johnny Smith-Rider led the Cru with 10 tackles, forced two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown.

The Cowboys are now 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. UMHB improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. HSU will travel across town to play McMurry in the Wilford Moore Trophy game next Saturday at 4 p.m.
