Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team took two games against the Trinity Tigers with a flair for the dramatic, winning 12-11 and 3-2 in the bottom of the final inning both games on Saturday at Ellis Field.
Hardin-Simmons led 2-0 in game one after RBIs from Haley Henson and Sarah Diessner. Trinity would go on a run and take a 7-2 lead after the fifth inning.
The Cowgirls added two more to cut it to 7-4 in the fifth with two RBIs from Jenna Sepeda. The Tigers added a run on a homerun to make it 8-4 in the sixth inning.
Kristen McMillan drove in a run in the sixth to make it 8-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh. The Cowgirls mounted a rally with two outs, culminating in an Ella Salinas three-run homerun to tie the game at 8-8 and force extra innings.
Trinity scored in the top of the eighth only to be answered by a Cowgirl run off an error, making the score 9-9. The Tigers added two in the ninth before the final chance for the Cowgirls.
Salinas singled to score one run and Sarah Diessner doubled to tie the game at 11-11. Diessner came home on a wild pitch to complete the comeback for the Cowgirls 12-11 in game one.
Kaylen Washington started with three strikeouts, Kylie Ruiz threw an inning with a strikeout, Aubrianna Salazar pitched two with four strikeouts, and Haven Williams finished with two innings and the win in the walk-off.
Salinas ended with four RBIs and Diessner led with four hits in the game.
The Cowgirls were quiet to start game two, going scoreless the first five innings trailing 2-0 to Trinity.
Madi Hubbard took a ball for a ride to the wall scoring a sac fly in the sixth to make it 2-1 Tigers.
The game came down to the final inning for the Cowgirls yet again trailing by one. HSU loaded the bases and Salinas delivered a double over the centerfielder to score the tying and winning runs for a 3-2 Cowgirl victory.
Williams threw a compete game with four hits and a strikeout to get the win for Hardin-Simmons. Jazlynn Cantu had two hits along with McMillan and Lindsey Ratcliffe to lead the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls take the doubleheader sweep of Trinity and move to 4-0 after the first weekend of action and will return to Ellis Field next week to host Simpson College Friday at 2 p.m. for another doubleheader.
