Cowgirls Come on Late to Clinch Two Wins Over Simpson

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team came on late Friday to finish two wins against the Simpson College Storm with final scores of 7-6 in extra innings and 10-5.

Hardin-Simmons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one off RBIs from Madison Mayhew and Ashley Easley

The Cowgirls found themselves down 5-2 after a couple big innings from the storm but were ready to answer in the sixth to tie the game 5-5.

Brittanie Henry hit an RBI single and Ella Salinas drove in another run for HSU. The Cowgirls scored the tying run on an error from Simpson.

Neither team managed a run in the seventh so the game continued to extra innings where Simpson scored on a wild pitch after working the runner to third to take a 6-5 lead.

The Cowgirls had a couple runners in scoring position and benefitted from a error over the first baseman to win in walk-off fashion 7-6 in the eighth.

Haven Williams started and threw 5 2/3 innings with one earned run and six strikeouts. Kylie Ruiz came in for the win in the late score with no earned runs in two innings. Haley Henson led the Cowgirls with three hits in the game.

Game two was a quiet night for the Cowgirls who cruised to a 5-1 lead until the sixth inning. Salinas, Sarah Diessner, and Kristen McMillan each drove in a run in the first to make it 3-0. Simpson added one for a 3-1 game in the fourth.

HSU followed with another two RBIs from Salinas in the fourth to make it 5-1. Simpson stormed back with four runs off a double and a homerun in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.

The Cowgirls answered the bell again in the sixth with five runs of their own. Mayhew doubled home a pair before Diessner launched her first homerun of the season to score two more. Freshman Jordan Iverson got her first homerun as a Cowgirl on a solo shot to finish the inning 10-5 HSU.

Kaylen Washington finished off the game to win with four strikeouts in the outing. Brinly Watkins also pitched for the Cowgirls.

Mayhew and Lindsey Ratcliffe had three hits each in game two, Ratcliffe with two doubles as well. Three other Cowgirls had a two-hit game, Salinas, Diessner, and Iverson, with Diessner and Salinas adding three RBIs apiece and Mayhew driving in two.

The Cowgirls move the record up to 6-0 on the year with a date with Schreiner at home on Saturday for two games beginning at 1 p.m. at Ellis Field.
