Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team pushed the win streak to eight to start the year after another double header sweep of Schreiner on Saturday at Ellis Field with scores of 9-8 and 5-2.
The Mountaineers started with a 1-0 lead scoring on a wild pitch in the first inning. The Cowgirls knocked in three with Sarah Diessner's first homerun of the season scoring two and Lindsey Ratcliffe doubling in another to make a 3-1 lead.
Aubrianna Salazar drove in a run and the Cowgirls scored another on an error to in the third. The scoring continued with a double steal play to score, and another HSU run off an error, wrapping the inning up at 7-1 Hardin-Simmons.
Schreiner added two in the fourth for a 7-3 game but the Cowgirls stretched it back out with a Diessner sac fly to make it 8-4. The Mountaineers got three RBIs in the fifth on a homerun and tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh.
The Cowgirls got down a sac bunt in the bottom of the seventh that led to another errant throw from the Schreiner defense and the winning Cowgirl run coming around for a 9-8 win in game one.
Diessner led with three RBIs and a homerun and Ratcliffe had two hits with an RBI double to lead the Cowgirls. Salazar started pitching for the Cowgirls and had three strikeouts in four innings. Kelly Shackelford threw an inning and Kylie Ruiz got the final inning plus and the win on the late run with three strikeouts.
Game two had an early Cowgirl lead with three runs in the first. Hardin-Simmons scored on an error and Diessner hit another sac fly for two. Kristen McMillan drove in a run to make it 3-0.
Haley Henson fixed her footing and cracked her first homerun of the season for ab RBI to open the third inning. McMillan drove in another run on an infield single to make it 5-0 Cowgirls after three.
Schreiner got another homerun to score two, but the Cowgirls held off the rally and won 5-2.
Madison Mayhew and McMillan led the Cowgirls with two hits in game two, McMillan adding two RBIs to lead the game.
Kaylen Washington started and pitched the complete game with just three hits and one earned run with four strikeouts in seven innings pitched.
The Cowgirls go 2-0 on the day and make the season record 8-0 with a series coming up next weekend on the road at Texas Lutheran in Seguin, Texas for two games on Friday starting at 2 p.m.
