Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team completed the sweep of Sul Ross State on Saturday with a 14-6 win in five innings in the final game of the American Southwest Conference series at Ellis Field.
The Cowgirls notched 14 hits in the game to nine for Sul Ross. The runs came early with RBIs from Ella Salinas, Madison Mayhew, and Sarah Diessner adding two in the first inning for a 4-0 HSU lead.
The Lobos added a run for a 4-1 game in the second but the Cowgirls answered with four more. Kristen McMillan doubled home two runs, then Salinas doubled for another two RBIs, and finally Mayhew doubled for another Cowgirl run to make it 8-1.
Sul Ross got a homerun in the third and scored two in the fourth to make it an 8-4 game. Diessner drove in another run in the fourth to put Hardin-Simmons up 9-4. The Lobos grinded out two more runs to make things interesting in the fifth, but the Cowgirls would get the last laugh with five more runs.
McMillan got an RBI on a hit by pitch with the sacks full and Salinas roped a ball over the centerfielder to clear the bases for three more RBIs, pushing her to six in the game. Jazzlyn Cantu hit a sac fly to score the last Cowgirl run to take the game on run rule 14-6.
Salinas had a perfect day with three hits and six RBIs with two doubles. Diessner, McMillan, Mayhew, and Ashley Easley all had two hits for the Cowgirls. Diessner and McMillan ended with three RBIs and Mayhew added two RBIs for the Cowgirl offense.
Aubrianna Salazar started pitching and threw three innings with just three hits in the win. Kelly Shackelford pitched an inning and Brinly Watkins finished with an inning and a strikeout for HSU.
The Cowgirls improve to 16-2 and 6-0 in ASC play and will take the week off for spring break before traveling to Round Rock to play at Concordia on March 24 at 4 p.m.
