Box Score 2 ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team split a doubleheader with the East Texas Baptist Tiger on Friday night in American Southwest Conference play to earn head coach Chanin Billings her 100th career win at Hardin-Simmons.
The Cowgirls took game one 9-7 over the Tigers at Ellis Field on Friday night and dropped the second game 13-3 to ETBU.
Coach Chanin Billings is in her sixth season at the helm of the Cowgirl program. She turned the ship around after a tough first year and has led the Cowgirls to a berth in the ASC Softball Tournament in each season and made it to the final day of the tournament in each appearance for four total years, with no tournament being played in the 2020 spring season.
The Cowgirls are well on their way to another ASC Tournament appearance with a 12-4 record in ASC play holding second place in the standings after Friday.
Game one had five lead changes in three innings of play to end in the Cowgirl win 9-7. HSU opened the game with a solo homerun to center from Lindsey Ratcliffe in the second inning, her second of the season.
The Tigers stormed back with three runs in the third inning to make it 3-1 ETBU. Ella Salinas would double home a run to make it 3-2 in the third for HSU before Ratcliffe went deep for the second time, this time driving in two RBIs to take the lead 4-3.
East Texas Baptist fired back again in the fourth, with four runs making it a 7-4 ballgame in their favor.
The Cowgirls would not be denied the lead and came back for five runs in the fourth inning for what would be the final score 9-7 in the win. Kristen McMillan drove in a run to start and Salinas got two more RBIs with a double to tie the game at 7-7.
Sarah Diessner took one for the team with bases loaded and got an RBI to take the lead 8-7. Abbey Tarr drove in the final Cowgirl run to make it 9-7 in the win.
Ratcliffe was three for three in game one with two homers and three RBIs to lead the Cowgirls. Salinas also had three RBIs in the contest.
Haven Williams started the game and went three innings before Aubrianna Salazar came in to get the win with two strikeouts in an inning. Kaylen Washington finished for the Cowgirls with a strikeout in two innings pitched.
The Tigers came on in game two with 17 hits to five for the Cowgirls in the 13-3 Tiger win. Ashley Croft won her 12th game of the year with a complete game for ETBU.
Haley Henson and McMillan each had a pair of hits including a double for the Cowgirls in game two. The Cowgirl RBIs came from McMillan, Salinas, and Madison Mayhew in the second game.
Kaylen Washington started and had the loss in four innings with Kelly Shackelford throwing a clean inning with a strikeout and Summer Simmons getting to finish the game with two innings pitched.
The Cowgirls move to 23-6 and 12-4 on the year in the ASC and ETBU is now 25-5 and 12-5 in conference. The ASC series concludes with the winner of Saturday's game at noon taking the series at Ellis Field.
