Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl softball team came up a run shy in a 3-2 loss to the East Texas Baptist Tigers to drop the American Southwest Conference series to on Saturday at Ellis Field.
The Cowgirls split on Friday with the Tigers to make the Saturday game decide the ASC series between the two teams. The Cowgirls will drop to third in the ASC standings after Saturday with a 12-5 record.
Unlike the Friday night games, the series finale started off slow with just a few baserunners for either team, amounting to a scoreless game through the first five innings.
The Tigers of ETBU worked runners into scoring position and added three to take the lead 3-0 in the sixth inning. The Cowgirls had a rally in the bottom of the seventh led by a Madison Mayhew triple to score two runs. Hardin-Simmons was kept from tying the game however, and the Tigers took home a 3-2 win.
Haley Henson and Madi Hubbard each had two hits in the game to lead the Cowgirls and Mayhew led with two RBIs on the triple. Haven Williams started for HSU with five innings of five-hit softball in the loss. Kaylen Washington finished the game with two innings, only allowing two hits.
The Cowgirls fall to 23-7 and 12-5 in ASC play while ETBU moves to 26-5 and 13-5 in the conference. The Cowgirls will go on the road this weekend to LeTourneau for three games beginning at 4 p.m. in Longview Friday night.
