ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' Cowgirl tennis team had seven athletes compete in the ITA Southwest Regional hosted in Abilene, beginning Thursday at the Streich Tennis Center and surrounding areas.
Four Cowgirls competed in the A bracket, while three more played in the B bracket in the ITA Regional on Thursday.
Junior
Laurel Coleman advanced in the opening round of 64 in the A bracket with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Valeria Garcia (Southwestern).
Taja Lawrence drew into the No. 1 overall seed in Ruth Hill (Trinity) for round one and went down 6-0, 6-0.
Brenna Gordon fell to Lydia Lee (Southwestern) 6-2, 6-1 and
Jonnah Smith played Hattie Berend (Southwestern) to a 7-6(2), 6-2 defeat in the A bracket.
Addyson Tylaska defeated Karitza Bencomo (McMurry) 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the second round in the B bracket.
Triniti McBride went down in a tiebreaker 6-7(3), 6-2, (10-6) to Lucia Rodriguez (St. Thomas Tex.) and
Lanae Blankenship dropped the opener 6-1, 6-4 to Jalon Burns (UMHB) for the Cowgirls in the B bracket.
All of the Cowgirls will continue tomorrow, either moving on or in consolation for singles. Doubles action begins Friday at the Streich Tennis Center for the ITA Southwest Regional.
