INDIAN HILLS, Calif. — Hardin-Simmons' men's tennis team split a pair of matches to open its spring break California trip, beating Linfield College 8-1 and falling 6-3 to California Technological Institute, on Monday in Indian Hills, Calif.
Erich Bein and Michael McCullough combined to go undefeated in six matches on the day. They teamed for 8-2 and 8-5 wins at No. 1 doubles and Bein won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. McCullough won his singles matches, 6-2, 6-1 and 7-6, 6-2.
HSU also received wins against Linfield from Sam May, Jordan Wilson, Andrew Eurek and Dylan Price at No. 3 thru No. 6 singles. Wilson teamed with Justin Fry for a win at No. 3 doubles.
The Cowboys, already playing without No. 3 player Nathan Chavez, who was injured in an automobile accident had his replacement Sam May have to retire against Cal Tech because of cramps. HSU lost all of the matches against Cal Tech except for Bein and McCullough.
HSU is now 2-3 on the year. Linfield fell to 0-5 on the year Cal Tech improved to 4-3. HSU plays George Fox (Ore.) on Tuesday at noon CDT.
