ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' men's tennis team received a big win at No. 6 singles to beat Concordia 5-4 in the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
The Cowboys took an early lead by winning two of three doubles matches.
Alex Hunt and Andre Eurek won 8-6 at No. 1 and
Ben Gutierrez and
Griffin Weinkam won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Chandler Livingston and
Jordan Davis lost a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles and HSU led 2-1 going into singles.
Hunt and Weinkam each won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and Concordia won at No. 3, 4 and 5 and the match was tied at 4-4.
It was left to
Ben Gutierrez at No. 6 singles and he won 6-1, 6-2 over Victor Escalon to give the Cowboys the win.
HSU is now 6-8 on the year and 1-0 in ASC play. Concordia fell to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play. HSU will host Howard Payne and UT-Dallas next weekend.
