ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's tennis team beat Concordia 5-2 to win the 2022 American Southwest Conference Championship on Saturday at River Place Country Club in Austin.  

HSU won its eighth overall and the first since 2007. The Cowboys avenged a 5-4 loss to the Tornados in both the regular season and in last season's championship match.

The match started with doubles play. Nathaniel Schoendorf and James Moore put the Cowboys on the board with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles and the Tornados tied it with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Davyn Williford and Josh Lopez gave the Cowboy the lead heading to singles with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

Schoendorf won the first singles match with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 and Alex Pavkovich gave the Cowboys the next point at No. 1 singles, winning 6-4, 6-0 over Joshua Bode.

Concordia put the next point on the board with Andres Padilla beating Williford, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles making the score 4-2.

James Moore, Josh Lopez and Desmond O'Shea all lost their first sets putting the Cowboys in danger. However, all three won their second set to force a third set.

Moore finished off Esteban Arredondo 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 to end the match and give the Cowboys the title.

Pavkovich was named the MVP of the tournament and Lopez, Schoendorf and Moore were named to the all-tournament team.

HSU is now 14-7 on the year and will advance to the NCAA Championship. The field will be announced on Monday. Concordia fell to 14-5 on the year.
