SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's tennis team had five athletes compete in the ITA Southwest Regional hosted in San Antonio, beginning Thursday at Trinity University.
Five Cowboys competed in the A bracket, and four Cowboys competed in the A bracket of doubles in the ITA Regional on Thursday.
Justus Petersilie advanced in the opening round of 64 in the A bracket with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Girithanan Dee (UT-Dallas).
Luke Cantu advanced to the round of 32 in the A bracket with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Christian Fernandez (Howard Payne).
Brandon Curiel went down 6-2, 6-2 to Shu-Lun Chang (University of Dallas).
Zach Fowler was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Robert Chang (Trinity).
Payne Smith went down 7-5, 6-1 to Adrian Munguia (Concordia).
In the A bracket doubles Fowler and Smith won 8-7 (5) over Dee and Gonzalez (UT-Dallas). Cantu and Petersilie dropped their match 8-7 (4) to Brylee White and Filip Bazant (Mary Hardin-Baylor).
All the Cowboys will continue tomorrow, either moving on or in consolation.
