starter on the football team, Bohling led the 1956 team in scoring with 39 points. The Albuquerque, N.M. product, was a second-team Border Conference selection in 1957 after rushing for a team-best 470 yards and ranking fifth in the nation in kickoff returns with 337 yards on 18 attempts. In 1958, he earned first-team Border Conference honors as he rushed for 451 yards. He was the team's kick return man, returning a total of 56 kicks during his career for a combined 865 yards. His 337 kickoff return yards stood as the single-game mark until 1990, the only time it's been topped. Overall, Bohling amassed 2,484 all-purpose yards, ranking seventh all time at HSU in the Division I era.

As a member of the track team, Bohling brought the Cowboys their only individual title of the 1957 Border Conference Track and Field Meet when he won the discus with an effort of 149 feet, 11 inches. One year earlier, Bohling placed third in the discus with a throw of 139-2. In 1959, Bohling left HSU to pursue a career in professional football. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers and later played for the New York Titans and Buffalo Bills. He later returned to HSU and earned his degree in 1963.

He then moved to New Mexico where he worked as a football and track coach for 43 years. He compiled a 150-100 record and won four district championships in football. In track, he won eight district championships, placed third in the state in 1970, and coached fifteen state champions. He was inducted into the New Mexico Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame in 2012.
